We try top bar beekeeping. To make up for poor pollination last year we decided to try keeping bees in top bar hives. This photo shows us pouring 3 lbs of loose bees (about 10,000 bees) into a home-made top bar hive. Top bar beekeeping is considered a healthy choice for bees because they make their own comb in just the way they want to! To learn more visit the Farm Practices side bar. We burn the field. During an unusually hot and dry week this spring we got some neighbors together and burned the back field. In order to prune and clean our field we try and burn every third cycle. This keeps diseases, fungus, and some weeds in check. To learn more click on Farm Practices on the side bar. Wild blueberries are one of three native fruit crops commercially cultivated in North America. They were initially cultivated by the Native Americans who periodically burned over areas to prune the plants in order to produce more fruit. |
